You can break only one altar at a time, working up to the next tier of armor and pickax before breaking the next, or break a bunch at once, which will mean there's more of each ore to find, which means you can upgrade your stuff faster, but more potential corruption squares. Each altar destroyed has a chance of spawning a single square of corruption or hallow, which will then spread like the rest. You need to make a cobalt or palladium drill to mine mythril/orichalcum, and you'll need a drill of either of those to mine admantite or titanium, and you'll need a drill of either of those to mine the next ore. Unlike prehardmode you'll need to constantly upgrade your pickax. The 5th just spawns more of the ore the 2nd demon altar broken spawned, and so on and so forth. The 4th altar just spawns more of what the 1st demon altar one spawned.
The 3rd will spawn either admantite or titanium. The 2nd altar broken will spawn either mythril or orichalcum. A helmet that gives melee damage will give a melee set bonus. You can easily tell what type of helmet it is by what it gives bonuses to. The set bonuses also correspond to which helmet you use. Something I would suggest doing is farming the Wall of Flesh. It extends the amount of time you cannot be hurt after getting hit, which is very helpful for bosses and such. The cross necklace, for example, is something you want to get your hands on as soon as possible. They do a lot of damage but tend to drop useful stuff. Another enemy to look out for is mimics, these look like a chest but turn into a mimic when you get close, or they get hit by something. You can stop the spinning by hitting them with a weapon, and any time one shows up you should kill it immediately. Both deal a lot of damage, and also have this spin attack where they spin and jump at you that does even more damage. The other is the giant tortoise and ice tortoise. You should stay far away from any spider nests until you have much better armor. It spawns inside spider nests (and rarely elsewhere in the cavern when you're near one) and they do ridiculous amounts of damage, and also poison. There's 2 that I would say are especially dangerous. Rescue him as you do the rest, by talking to him. The Wizard can now randomly show up in the cavern layer.
